Once you’re registered, navigate to the Retail License Agreement link, where you’ll enter basic info like name and address. As you’ll see, most of it self-explanatory.

  1. Contact name, email, address, phone number: So we know where to find you for mailing your royalty checks!  You’ll find our terms and conditions here, and you can also electronically sign and date this document.

After you finish this form, you’re ready to enter your book information.  Go to the next link called: Upload Your Title Information. Again, this is pretty self-explanatory.

2. ISBN: Your book’s number identifier.  If you need an ISBN for your book, you can purchase them on www.bowker.com.  Another post that might help is: All About ISBN’s.

3. Title, author, publisher (if you are a self-publisher, enter your name), publication year.

4. Retail price: This is the retail price, set by you.  From this price, the production costs are taken out, along with a 25% commission to PG.  What is left is your PROFIT.  Many authors ask us how to establish the price for their books. This is tricky and totally up to you but you might want to Google the topic and read a few articles. Here is one that could be helpful:   https://www.shopify.com/retail/120028547-9-strategies-for-profitably-pricing-your-retail-products

5. Size: This is the trim or final size of the book.  We need separate measurements for height and width.

6. Book format: The type of book binding—whether it is hard cover or soft cover.

7. Book Description: Write a synopsis that entices people to read your book!  Make it interesting!

8. Author bio:  All about you!  Same principle as above applies here.

9. Book Category code, or BISAC: Is your book findable on the internet?  BISAC will help. This is the subject or category that best fits your title. Go to https://www.bisg.org/bisac/complete-bisac-subject-headings-2015-edition. Click on the appropriate subject area. From there, find the 9 character code; it will look something like this:     PER017000

You’re on the homestretch now!  All that is left is uploading your files, one file for the covers, and one file for the interiors.  Remember, files must be in PDF format, print-ready.  Click on the Upload button.  That’s it, you’re finished!

Attendance was up at BEA in Chicago

For the first time in 12 years, Chicago played host to the Book Expo America.  Touted as the largest annual publishing industry event in North America, BEA rivals the Frankfurt Book rivaling Fair and London Book Fair in size and scale.

Although the change in venue to Chicago meant a smaller show in terms of exhibitors, it did shine a spotlight on often overlooked Chicago and Midwestern publishers. According to the American Booksellers Association, many booksellers who don’t normally make the trip to New York City, did come to Chicago. In fact, overall attendance was up by 1000 people, with a 10% increase in VIP attendees.

Since Chicago has been PG’s home for over 20 years, this was a fantastic opportunity to feature our publishing solutions for publishers and authors. The Reprint Center plus our new direct to consumer bookstore, PGDirect were demonstrated at the show, to many positive reviews.

Dozens of sessions, panels, and lectures were scheduled during BEA. Some programs educate new and experienced booksellers on how to become better at the business. Others focus on trends that affect publishers, editors, and/or agents. Still others help self-publishers master social media and book promotion.

Anthony Ferrigno, VP of Sales and Distribution noted, “As I have been to BEA many times over the years, BEA at McCormick Place in Chicago this year was another positive EXPO experience. It had a good mix of domestic, international, self- publishers and publisher service providers. In that BEA usually fosters the opportunity for new B2B business and the opportunity to see old colleagues in the industry this EXPO did not disappoint!”

And the celebrity authors! There were several celebrities at BEA this year including Jamie Lee Curtis and Nicole Curtis from HGTV’s Rehab Addict. We even had a visit from John Wayne’s grandson who posed for a quick photo!

“Write about what you know.” So goes the saying, and for Paul Herd, that means classic cars as well as a mystery novel set in the Ozarks of Missouri.

The classic cars came first. Paul created his publishing company, PAH Publishing, based around his love of cars. For the last 31 years, he’s written, photographed and published over 30 automotive tech manuals that help collectors restore classic cars and trucks. Sales have continued to grow as new books and manuals are added to the publishing group.

Paul’s manuals are really tools that help collectors source replacement parts for their vehicles and understand the manufacturers’ complicated coding sheets.  His manuals cover some of America’s most beloved and iconic models including the Cadillac, Ford trucks, and Mustangs.IMG_0364

During breaks in his thriving publishing business, Paul, who also writes under the pen name of Thomas Mulveigh, wrote a novel called “Blood Necklace,” a murder mystery set in the Ozarks where he resides.  It’s his first fiction novel, and his second is in the works, due out early next year.

Reprint Center fills the Distribution Void

Using a combination of channels to market and promote his titles, Paul sells his books directly on his own website, http://www.goldenroadspublishing.com, and also takes advantage of PG’s Reprint Center for shortruns for shipping directly to bookstores and author events.

Paul was one of PG’s first customers to use PG’s new Reprint Center. He says, “You have made it so much easier to use, we just find our company in the list of all our titles so I don’t have to sort through endless list of titles hunting for the one I want.  I don’t need to use a different purchase order number for every title, I can have one per customer, which is much easier to reconcile in our files.”
